Sri Lanka’s First Honorary Consul in Mozambique

Hon. Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris has approved the appointment by the Sri Lankan High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa of Mr.Vali Momade Hassam as Sri Lanka’s first Honorary Consul in Mozambique.

Mr. Hassam is a Chairman of a diversified family owned business situated in Maputo involved in tourism, property development and trading. Mr. Hassam has also been a long standing member of the FRELIMO Ruling Party which at its inception played a crucial role in the revolutionary struggle against Portuguese colonial rule.   Accordingly it is envisaged that Mr. Hassam will assist the Pretoria High Commission to develop the commercial relationship between Sri Lanka and Mozambique as well as strengthen Government to Government linkages.
H.E. Shehan Ratnavale the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Pretoria, South Africa concurrently accredited to Mozambique, presented Mr. Hassam on 24th August 2012 the commission letter appointing him as Honorary Consul in Mozambique. At this meeting it was also indicated that Sri Lankan companies have an interest in exploring opportunities in several areas including port construction, port management, mini hydropower, ship/boat-building and
hospital services.
