Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam has been accredited as the first non-resident High Commissioner for Sri Lanka to Trinidad & Tobago, resident in the United States with effect from October 13, 2015. Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations with Trinidad & Tobago in 1972 and Trinidad & Tobago has been accrediting its High Commissioner in New Delhi, as their High Commissioner to Sri Lanka since 1983.
Sri Lanka’s decision to appoint a High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Trinidad & Tobago is a manifestation of a desire to further promote political, economic and business relations between the two nations, taking into account common bonds based on their membership in the Commonwealth and Non Aligned Movement (NAM), as well as island nations with similar social and sporting traditions.
Following the Ceremonial Presentation of Credentials to the President of Trinidad & Tobago, Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona, High Commissioner Kariyawasam met with the Minster of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Trade & Industry and several government officials as well as the Chamber of Industry & Commerce of Trinidad & Tobago, for promoting better political and business links with Sri Lanka.
