SRI LANKANS CELEBRATE IFTAR IN JAKARTA

Ambassador welcoming remarks

Sri Lankans in Indonesia gathered at the Embassy of Sri Lanka on Saturday, 26 May 2018 to observe Iftar for the third consecutive year in Jakarta.

The event organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka and the Muslim community brought together Sri Lankans of all religious denominations to share Iftar.  Representatives of the community as well as children commenced the evening by lighting the traditional oil lamp. Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Indonesia Dharshana M. Perera while welcoming those gathered outlined the tremendous contribution the Sri Lankan Muslim community has made to the life of the Nation including in governance, arts, literature and music, architecture and indeed diplomacy.  He particularly highlighted the role of Muslim leaders who were in the forefront of the country’s independence struggle and the establishment of peace in Sri Lanka.

The significance of Ramadan and the practice of fasting – its spiritual and foundations and benefits to lifestyle – was outlined in a talk given by a community leader. The evening’s Dua Prayers with blessings to all Sri Lankans and Indonesians were lead by Ustad Noordin Amin – a distinguished member of the clergy from the Menteng Mosque.

Sri Lankan cuisine, including Sri Lankan Muslim food was served to the gathering at the  event.
