A military delegation from Sri Lanka comprising eighteen officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force led by the Commandant of the Defence Services and Staff College, Major General N.J. Walgama visited the Philippines on an overseas study tour from 13th to 23rd August 2014. During the study tour, the members of the delegation visited several military institutions and held meetings with relevant officials.
On 14th August, the delegation visited the Armed Forces of the Philippines Command and General Staff College (AFPCGSC). They also visited the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manila and paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador-designate, Dr. Gamini Samaranayake. The Ambassador in his welcome speech emphasized the importance of bilateral military cooperation as both countries have common interests and enhanced diplomatic ties between the two nations will be mutually beneficial. Later, the delegation attended a dinner hosted by the Ambassador at the Official Residence.
The delegation also visited the historical and strategic Corregidor Island. The other important places of visit included the Arms Corporation of the Philippines (ARMSCOR), the National Defence College of the Philippines (NDCP), the Headquarters of the Philippines Navy and the Headquarters of the Philippines Marine Corps, the Headquarters of the Philippines Army, and the Headquarters of the Philippines Air Force Villamor, the Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) and the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) of the Philippines Army at Camp O’Donnell, Capas, Tariac.
On completing this important study tour, the delegation left for Sri Lanka. The visit has undoubtedly served to strengthen the existing friendly relations between Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
