Sri Lankan Community in China gathers at the Embassy to Celebrate Sinhala and Tamil New Year

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing, together with the Sri Lanka - China Economic, Education and Cultural Association (SCEECA) and the members of the Sri Lankan community organized a colourful event to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year at the Embassy premises on 06 April 2024.

In keeping with the New Year traditions, the celebrations commenced with lighting the hearth and the traditional oil lamp.

Delivering the welcome remarks, Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing K.K. Yoganaadan underscored the importance of coming together as Sri Lankans to celebrate this important cultural event that reflects the cultural diversity of Sri Lanka.

Senior Lecturer of the Beijing Foreign Affairs University Most Ven. Malwane Chandrarathana Thero invoked blessings upon those gathered and on Sri Lanka.  Minister of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing Poornima Gunasekera highlighted the significance and the history of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations in Sri Lanka.

The official programme was followed by traditional New Year games and cultural performances. The Chinese students of the Department of Sinhala language in the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) availed themselves of this opportunity to get a first-hand experience on Sri Lankan culture.
