New Delhi/Chennai: Sri Lanka on Friday apologised to Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after pulling from its defence ministry website an offensive and derogatory article with graphics concerning her letters to Mr Modi on the various issues related to Sri Lankan Tamils.

The unqualified apology followed a stern response from the Chief Minister and the Indian Government to the offending article, titled ‘How meaningful are Jayalalithaa’s love letters to Narendra Modi?’ which also triggered a rare show of togetherness among the rival parties in Tamil Nadu in denouncing Colombo and demanding that India take tough action. The issue also rocked the Indian Parliament.

Taking strong exception to the article, Jayalalithaa wrote to the PM saying though it had been removed from the website, the “damage has been done”. Accusing Colombo of trying to create fissures in India’s federal polity, she demanded an unconditional apology for the insinuations against her.

“The visual rendering on the homepage of the official website just above the link is highly objectionable as it depicted both the Prime Minister of India and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (herself) in a very trivialised, derogatory and disrespectful manner,” Jayalalithaa said in her letter to Modi.
