Newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Dr Dayan Jayatilleka, and Madame Sanja Jayatilleka visited “Maison et Objet”, a well known trade fair for Home Textiles and Home Decoration in France on 23 January 2011 in Villepinte, a suburb of Paris.

Sri Lanka was represented at the fair by the Sri Lankan company, M/S Kandygs Handlooms (Exports) Ltd which displayed the “Kandygs Boo Collection”, a collection of toys, play rugs, bed covers and cushion covers made out of bamboo fabric. Ms. Anuradha Yahampath, Director of Kandygs Handlooms was at hand to explain to visitors how the items are produced using bamboo.  It was encouraging to see the large number of visitors to the fair flock to the Sri Lankan stall, a testimony to the high standards of craftsmanship of Sri Lankan products.

The participation of Kandygs Handlooms was facilitated by the CBI (Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries) an agency of the Division for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

CBI encourages young exporters to explore the international trade market. Mr. Steve Pepper, CBI Expert on Home Textiles, noted that new companies and products are introduced through CBI giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their products to the people under the wing of CBI for a duration of time and thereafter assistance is provided for new business ventures to be initiated.

The “Maison et Objet” Trade Fair was held from 21st to 25th January 2011.
