Sri Lanka reassures its commitment in Multilateralism, at the Council of the South Centre in Geneva

The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Sumith Dassanayake, reassured Sri Lanka’s strong commitment in multilateralism, addressing the 26th Council Meeting of the South Centre held at the UN Headquarters in Geneva on 23 April 2026.

In his address, Ambassador Dassanayake acknowledged the constructive contributions of the South Centre, in the last three decades, to the developing countries through technical analysis and policy recommendations on a wide range of areas; across international trade, debt restructuring, taxation, climate change, finance for development, intellectual property and health etc.

The 26th Council of Representatives of the South Centre was held under the Chairmanship of the former President of South Africa (1998-2008), Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki. The South Centre is an Intergovernmental think tank of the Global South, established in 1995. The current membership of the Centre is 55 States. The renowned Sri Lankan economist Dr. Gamani Corea was the Chairperson of the Centre from 2002-2003.
