As part of its labour welfare programme, and with the intention of providing education and training to Sri Lankan domestic workers, a four-month tailoring course was conducted by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) with the support of the Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore from 30 June to 03 November 2019 in Singapore.

Forty Sri Lankan domestic workers who successfully completed the tailoring course were awarded certificates of completion by the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Singapore Sashikala Premawardhane on 10 November 2019.

Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner stated that the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and the High Commission of Sri Lanka initiated this outreach course as part of its efforts to bring labour welfare services closer to the Sri Lankan domestic workers, and to promote their upskilling.

Domestic workers of Sri Lanka who are employed abroad contribute immensely to the national economy by the remittance of foreign exchange which is currently the single highest foreign remittance source of Sri Lanka. If the Sri Lankan domestic workers could improve their skills, not only their personal finances, but also the national economy of Sri Lanka would benefit, the High Commissioner said further at the occasion.

The High Commissioner expressed gratitude for the assistance extended by Chief Incumbent of the Lankaramaya temple, Singapore Ven Rathanananda Thero, Mahakaruna Buddhist Society Ven. Dr. Gunaratana Thero and President of the Singapore Sinhala Buddhist Association Bennet Manukularathne for the valuable support extended towards conducting the programme.

Counsellor (Labour Welfare & Employment) L.Y.Pathirana,  First Secretary & Staff (Labour Welfare & Employment) Sajith Chaminda and a large number of Sri Lankan migrant workers and expatriate Sri Lankans participated in the ceremony.
