With a view to alleviating difficulties and inconveniences faced by the Sri Lankan migrant workers, the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Malaysia conducted a mobile consular service on 28 April 2024 at Batu Pahat in the State of Johor where the majority of Sri Lankans are employed.
This mobile service enabled the Sri Lankan migrant workers to avail consular services without obtaining leave and spending hard earned money to travel to Kuala Lumpur. Around ninety six Sri Lankans availed this opportunity to submit their passport applications, renew employment registration with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), and authenticate documents. Others utilized this opportunity to obtain advice on procedural matters.
The officials of the High Commission also held discussions with the representatives of Malaysian companies and resolved a number of matters/disputes that involved Sri Lankan migrant workers.
In addition to the consular service, the High Commission conducted a Medical Camp with the assistance of a Sri Lankan doctor Chanaka Rajapakshe, residing and employed in Malaysia. Approximately Seventy Sri Lankans employees, both Male and Female, attended the medical camp, as many of them face challenges in obtaining proper medical assistance due to language barriers and high medical cost. The medicines were provided by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.
Furthermore, the Third Secretary of the High Commission conducted a mental health awareness programme, while Deshabandu Yajeewa Witharanage conducted a meditation programme and a session on drug prevention. Approximately one hundred and fifty Sri Lankans attended the motivational session.
