The Sri Lanka High Commission in Malaysia celebrated International Women's Day on 8 March 2024, with a dedicated awareness program focused on cervical cancer.
The event brought together Sri Lankan-origin Malaysian women, Sri Lankan expatriate women, social workers, university students, members of the Sri Lanka Women Society, staff members, and families. It was an occasion to highlight and appreciate the notable achievements of appointing the first woman Prime Minister and first woman President in the world. Additionally, the event celebrated Sri Lankan women's significant contributions to the national economy, particularly during times of economic hardship. The remittances received from Sri Lankan mothers and sisters have played a crucial role in stabilizing the economy and purchasing essential goods and fuel.
As part of the program, the Mission arranged an insightful session to raise awareness among women about the importance of cervical cancer prevention and early detection. Dr. Chanaka Rajapakse, a Sri Lankan doctor from Thomson Hospital, Malaysia, led an informative discussion, providing valuable insights into the risks, symptoms, and preventive measures associated with cervical cancer.
In addition to the medical session, the event featured an introductory briefing by prominent Sri Lankan social media influencer and entrepreneur Sarah Illyas on the concept of Bengkung binding, a traditional postpartum practice known for its health benefits and support for women's well-being.
