The Sri Lanka High Commission in the United Kingdom commemorated Sri Lanka’s 76th Independence Day with a vibrant community celebration on 17 February 2024, at the Roystonhill Hub Community Centre in Glasgow, marking the first-ever such celebration in Scotland.
The event tailored for the Sri Lankan community in Scotland, drew a significant turnout, with participation from community members and the presence of several Glasgow councillors. The organization of the event received key support from the Most Venerable Kamburawala Rewatha Nayaka Thera, the Chief Incumbent of the Scotland Buddhist Vihara, as well as Director of the Cross Ethnic Community David Nallaratnam, along with its members. Noteworthy participation also included Reverend Morawaka Dhammarakkitha Thera, the Buddhist Chaplain of Strathclyde University in Glasgow, and representatives from various other religious faiths.
A significant aspect of the celebration was the inclusion of a consular help desk, offering informational assistance to individuals of Sri Lankan origin residing in Scotland. Over 100 Sri Lankan community members in Scotland availed of consular assistance through this service. This initiative underscored the Sri Lanka High Commission's dedication to serving its diaspora and ensuring their welfare and security.
The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom Rohitha Bogollagama conveyed his appreciation to the Sri Lankan community in Scotland for their steadfast support and active participation in the Independence Day celebrations. He also extended gratitude to the event's organizers and volunteers for their valuable contributions to its success.
