The Sri Lankan community actively participated in an awareness program organized by the Sri Lanka Embassy in Jordan on 24 February 2023 at the Embassy premises to support anti-human trafficking activities to protect safe global migration.
The intention of the program was to educate Sri Lankan nationals and make them aware about human trafficking, its consequences, related laws and punishment, recent development in the government policies, and more importantly how anti-human trafficking activities in Sri Lanka can be supported.
Recalling the long and friendly relationship which has existed between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and Sri Lanka in her opening remarks Ambassador-designate Priyangika Wijegunasekara extended her appreciation to the Government and the friendly people in Jordan for assisting Sri Lankans by providing more employment opportunities and a safe working environment in Jordan.
Ambassador-designate highlighted the importance of developing more connectivity between the two countries, promoting legal migration and combating human trafficking which is a global organized crime. She emphasized that raising awareness among helpless communities is very important while addressing the root causes of vulnerabilities.
A representative from Caritas organization in Amman, Jordan briefed on human trafficking and ways of identifying and how to address their grievances. Third Secretary (Employment & Welfare) Abhayadeera Rupasinghe highlighted the importance of legal migration and Consular Officer Harshana Liyanage spoke about anti-human trafficking activities in Sri Lanka.
An interaction session was held at the end of the program. Approximately 50 Sri Lankans attended the event.
