Sri Lanka Embassy in The Netherlands celebrates Christmas

The Sri Lanka Embassy in the Netherlands celebrated Christmas on 20th December 2014 in the Embassy premises amidst a gathering of Sri Lankan community from all ethnic and religious backgrounds domiciled in the country.

Addressing the gathering on behalf of H.E. the Ambassador Buddhi K. Athauda, Ms. Wathsala Amarasinghe, Second Secretary of the Embassy statedthat the birth of the Jesus Christ in a humble stable in Bethlehem is not merely a historical or religious incident, but indeedbrought about a significant transformation in human life, transcending barriers of humankind by spreading love and peace. She added that the necessity of understanding this noble teaching appears much important in contemporary Sri Lankan context than ever, especially in a time when country is moving towards to build a lasting peace to ensure that the fruits of development can be shared and enjoyed by all.

Following the welcome address Rev Fr. Van der Helm , the Deacon of the Roman Catholic Church in the Hague conducted a sermon and prayers on the occasion highlighting the Christmas message of peace, love and joy.

The melodious Christmas carolswhich were conducted by Sri Lankan community sung in Sinhala, Tamil, English and Dutch with the participation of the Embassy staff, , foreign nationals and two Dutch Catholic nuns was the highlight of the event which filled the air with Christmas spirit and joy. Thenativity play by little children and the arrival of Santa Clause in par with the Christmas traditions added more attraction to the event.

The significant presence of Sri Lankan community in the event from all backgrounds and their dedication to make the event success despite harsh weather conditions demonstrated the unity, understanding, friendship and sharing.

The evening program was ended with serving of Sri Lankan food which enjoyed by everybody who attended the event.
