Sri Lanka Embassy in Nepal celebrates 65th Independence Commemoration of Sri Lanka

Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu celebrated Sri Lanka’s 65th National Day on 4th February 2013. The Embassy held two functions to celebrate the event in Kathmandu. The morning celebrations were held at the Embassy premises with the hoisting of the national flag by His Excellency Mr. W.M. Senevirathna, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Nepal and followed by the national anthem. Traditional oil lamp was lighted by the Ambassador and some invited guests. Sri Lankan expatriate community in Nepal participated at the event.

Religious observances by Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islamic faiths were an important part of the ceremony. National Day messages of His Excellency the President, Hon. Prime Minister and Hon. Minister of External Affairs of Sri Lanka were also read and a two minute silence was observed in honour of all the national heroes who have sacrificed their lives for the country. An alms giving (Dana) was organized at the Chancery for nearly 20 religious dignitaries who were present at the event. Head of Mission thanked the invited guests who were present at the ceremony.

A National Day reception was organized at Hotel Hyatt Regency, Kathmandu on 5th evening for Senior officials for the Nepal Government, Members of the Diplomatic corps, members of business community, media personnel, Nepal-Sri Lanka Friendship Association and Nepal-Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce. Hon. Yadu Bansh Jha, Minister of Forest and Soil Conservation of Nepal has graced the event as the Chief Guest.

Ambassador W.M. Senevirathna welcomed the Chief Guest and other invitees who were present at the occasion and stated that the longstanding relationship between two countries has been expanded in multifaceted areas of cooperation.

Chief Guest Hon. Yadu Bansh Jha also conveyed reetings to His Excellency the President and the people of Sri Lanka and said that the existing goodwill, mutual respect, understanding and cooperation have marked our relations ever since the establishment of our diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Traditional Sri Lankan foods were treated for guests at both functions held in Embassy premises and Hotel Hyatt in Kathmandu.
