As part of the commemorations of the 76th Independence Day of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan, in collaboration with the Greater Amman Municipality jointly planted 15 olive trees in Al Wahda Park, West of Amman on 26 February 2024 with the participation of the Sri Lankan and Jordanian communities.
In her opening speech, Ambassador J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara expressed Sri Lanka's commitment to steadily develop further the traditional friendly bilateral relations and cooperation between Sri Lanka and Jordan. The Ambassador emphasized that the trees that we have planted today will grow as a symbol of goodwill and friendship between our two countries.
The Ambassador stressed the collective responsibility to safeguard the environment, noting that simple actions like planting trees can make a significant impact and highlighted the important role played by Sri Lanka as a country that is highly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change in combating climate change and related issues.
Speaking at the event, Deputy City Manager for Health and Agriculture, Mervat Mohammad Almhirat appreciated the partnership and friendship of the Embassy and emphasized the need for collaboration to address global challenges. She further reiterated the importance of environmental preservation by planting more trees for future generations.
