The Embassy of Sri Lanka in France initiated a project to promote Sinhala and Tamil languages among children of the Sri Lankan community residing in France with a view to promoting the Sinhala and Tamil cultures.
The project would be geared towards enabling children of Sri Lankan origin to sit for Ordinary Level examinations in Sinhala and Tamil conducted by the Government of Sri Lanka. The first distribution of text books received from the Educational Publications Department was held at the Embassy on Sunday, 21st February 2010 under the auspices of the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Achala Jagoda, who was on a working visit to Paris.
Representatives from the Centre d’Etude et Culturel du Sri Lanka en France and the Sarasavi Ranga Nikethanaya were presented with text books on this occasion.
Addressing the gathering the Hon. Minister noted the valuable contribution made by the Sri Lanka community overseas and the role they could play in the future. He also highlighted the salient aspects of the development drive under way in Sri Lanka, with a view to promoting the tourism sector and improving the current standards. The Ambassador of Sri Lanka in France, Lionel Fernando, speaking on the occasion noted the timeliness of the project undertaken by the Embassy and expressed his hope that it would achieve its desired goal.
The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Mr. Eranga Basnayake, the Managing Director of the Bureau, Mr. Dileep Mudadeniya and a large gathering of the Sri Lanka community were present at this function at the Embassy.
