353 Sri Lankan Birth Certificates issued for the Sri Lankan children living in the refugee camps in Salem district of Tamil Nadu and 567 Sri Lanka Citizenship Certificates issued for the Sri Lankan children living in the refugee camps in Remeshwaram, Virudunagar and Madurai in Tamil Nadu were handed over for distribution by the Actg. Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Mr. O.L. Ameerajwad to Shri B. Anand, IAS, the newly appointed Principal Secretary/Commissioner of Rehabilitation & Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils of the Government of Tamil Nadu during their meeting held on 7th May 2013 at the Commissionerate of Rehabilitation, in Chennai. Mr. W.M. Dharmapala, Minister Counsellor of the Deputy High Commission was also present at the meeting.
The Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai has been conducting “Mobile Service Programmes” in various districts of Tamil Nadu to register the births of Sri Lankan children who were born in Tamil Nadu and living in the refugee camps. Following the registration of their births, citizenship certificates are issued. In the past, such mobile service programmes were conducted in Gummidipoondi, Madurai, Virudunagar, Rameshwaram, Cuddalore and Salem districts of Tamil Nadu. The Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission also conducted “Special Consular Service Programmes” to register the births of Sri Lankan children who were born in Tamil Nadu and are living in the refugee camps in Tamil Nadu, at the Chancery premises of the Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai. More than 5,000 Sri Lankan birth and citizenship certificates have been issued for the Sri Lankan children who were born in Tamil Nadu and living in the refugee camps in Tamil Nadu by the Deputy High Commission for last four years.
