The Honorary Consulate of Sri Lanka in Styria & Carinthia in Austria celebrated the 75th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka on 08 February 2023.
The event organized by Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Styria & Carinthia Edith Hornig at the historic University of Arts in Graz was attended by Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka Majintha Jayesinghe, President of the Styrian Parliament Manuela Khom, honorary consuls based in Graz, officials, entrepreneurs, tour operators and travel agents, Sri Lankan community, and the print and electronic media.
The ceremony commenced with lighting the traditional oil lamp. The National Anthems were sung by Niran de Mel, a Sri Lankan tenor residing in Graz.
Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe recalled the cherished and special relationship between Sri Lanka and Austria since ancient times. The Ambassador went on to state that over the years, cooperation between the two countries has grown exponentially covering a multitude of areas of mutual interest.
Addressing the gathering, President of the Styrian Parliament Manuela Khom said the large number of attendees at the event is testimony to the friendly and cordial relations between Sri Lanka and Austria.
Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe presented a memento to Honorary Consul Edith Horning in recognition of her 18-year service as the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Styria & Carinthia.
The event featured traditional Sri Lankan dance by the troupe of the Channa – Upuli Performing Arts Foundation. Sri Lankan cuisine and sweetmeats were served to the invitees.
