Sri Lanka Consulate General in Guangzhou Celebrates 75th Anniversary of Independence

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou celebrated the 75th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka in a solemn ceremony held on 04 February 2023, with the participation of the Sri Lankan community and friends of Sri Lanka.

The ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the national flag and singing the national anthem in Sinhala, followed by multi-religious observances conducted to invoke blessings on the country and the people. The independence day messages of the President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister were read out in Sinhala and Tamil with the English versions displayed on a screen.

While extending warm greetings to fellow Sri Lankans upon completing 75 years as an independent nation, Consul General Suranga Algewatte, in his remarks, urged all those who attended to play their part to promote economic activities and engagement between Sri Lanka and Southern China and to make every possible contribution to help overcome the current challenges faced by the country.

The formal proceedings concluded with the signing of the national anthem in Tamil. The guests were served refreshments, and against the backdrop of China easing travel restrictions on outbound tours for its citizens, which includes travel to Sri Lanka, tourism promotional videos were screened for the gathering .
