Sri Lanka celebrates 77th Independence Day in Hanoi

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Hanoi celebrated the 77th Independence Day at the residence of Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Viet Nam, Poshitha Perera on 04 February 2025. The event brought together Vietnamese dignitaries, officials, and representatives from various sectors and Sri Lankans in Viet Nam, reinforcing the strong bond between the two countries.

The ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the flag and the playing of traditional Magul Bera (Sri Lankan ceremonial drums), followed by the singing of the National Anthems of both Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The proceedings also featured religious observances representing Sri Lanka’s diverse faiths including Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Catholic prayers, highlighting the country’s commitment to interfaith harmony.

A special feature of the event was the screening of promotional videos highlighting Sri Lanka’s key industries such as agriculture, electrical and IT industries, to boost Sri Lanka’s exports and foster economic engagement with Viet Nam. Ambassador Poshitha Perera made remarks on the 55th Anniversary of Sri Lanka-Viet Nam diplomatic relations, emphasizing the long-standing partnership between the two countries and potential areas of cooperation in trade and cultural exchange.

In line with Sri Lanka’s sustainable development goals, Ambassador Perera also shared insights into the "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative which is aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. The event showcased the richness of Sri Lankan cuisine with live demonstrations of kottu and Sri Lankan hoppers, offering attendees a taste of Sri Lanka's culinary heritage.

Guests were presented with souvenir bags containing a commemorative mug marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka and Viet Nam, along with brochures promoting Sri Lanka's Gem and Jewellery sector, investment opportunities, and more.

The event was attended by the Director General of South Asia at the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other officials, officials from the Vietnamese Ministry of Trade, and representatives from the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Also present were a delegate representing the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha, members of the Hanoi Union of Friendship Associations, the Viet Nam-Sri Lanka Friendship Association, and numerous prominent business leaders from Viet Nam.

The celebration reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to deepening its ties with Viet Nam and highlighted the shared goals of both countries for future cooperation and development.
