Sri Lanka can be a role model for countries in the region that are in transition from post-conflict to sustainable development, founding Chairman of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties and Co-Chairman of its Standing Committee Jose de Venecia Jr, observed in his opening remarks at the inauguration of the 8th General Assembly of the ICAPP at Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre yesterday.
Addressing the Assembly, Venecia noted that Sri Lanka has achieved much success in ushering sustainable development since defeating the scourge of terrorism.
He also called for deeper and closer ties and a concerted effort from Asian nations to combat terrorism and crime, and facilitate enhanced cooperation in social and economic development.
Vanecia also noted that regional nations should help each other during natural calamities and in protecting the environment.
Speaking on the theme of the 8th ICAPP General Assembly, Building an Asian Community he said, enhanced cooperation on the above issues will be the first step in realising this goal. Vanecia noted that he was confident President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Chairperson of the ICAPP, will give leadership to the organisation to achieve it's cherished goals in the next two years.
