Sri Lanka and Thailand pledge to strengthen bilateral ties through cultural, economic, and strategic cooperation

Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe met with Secretary-General to the Office of the Prime Minister of Thailand, Prommin Lertsuiridej, at the Golden Dome Room, Thai Khu Fah Building of the Government House in Bangkok on 31 January 2025.

The meeting underscored the strong historical and cultural ties between the two countries, rooted in shared Theravada Buddhist traditions.

One of the key highlights of the discussions was the upcoming celebration of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand in 2025. Both sides expressed their commitment to commemorating this significant milestone with initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors.

Ambassador Edirisinghe highlighted Sri Lanka’s nationwide “Clean Sri Lanka Project,” an initiative launched under the patronage of the President of Sri Lanka, aimed at achieving the vision “Beautiful Island, Smiling People”.

The role of women in politics was another focal point of the meeting and the Ambassador emphasized Sri Lanka’s commitment to enhancing women’s political participation and expressed interest in exchanging knowledge and strategies with Thailand to advance this goal. Secretary-General Lertsuiridej welcomed this initiative and assured Thailand’s support and cooperation in this regard.

Moreover, economic collaboration between the two countries was also discussed, with both sides exchanging views on enhancing trade and investment. The Secretary General noted the potential benefits of the Sri Lanka-Thailand Free Trade Agreement which was signed last year. Tourism promotion was another priority area, with both nations recognizing the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections and boosting tourist exchanges.

The issue of human trafficking was also addressed during the meeting, with Thailand emphasizing its commitment to combating the issue as a transit country over the past three years. Both parties agreed on the importance of cooperation and shared responsibility in addressing this pressing challenge in the region.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the strong partnership between Sri Lanka and Thailand. Both sides expressed optimism about deepening their collaboration in areas of shared interest and building a future of prosperity and mutual benefit.
