Sri Lanka and Romania Advance Bilateral Cooperation Across Political, Economic and Labour Sectors

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Romania, Madurika Joseph Weninger, met with the Director-General for Asia and the Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Călin Mitri, in Bucharest for discussions aimed at further strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Both sides reviewed progress in Sri Lanka–Romania relations and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing political consultations, concluding ongoing bilateral agreements, and expanding collaboration across labour, economic and cultural spheres.

The Ambassador underscored the importance of convening the next round of Political Consultations in 2026 to sustain momentum in the bilateral dialogue. It was agreed that the consultations will take place in 2026, with dates to be coordinated for the latter part of the year.

Discussions also focused on shared priorities, including broadening economic engagement, facilitating opportunities for skilled professionals, and enhancing tourism and people-to-people exchanges. Both sides welcomed the rise in Romanian tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka and noted the potential for further growth through improved connectivity and targeted promotional initiatives.

Progress on several bilateral instruments was acknowledged, with both sides agreeing to advance the remaining steps toward their timely completion, including the MoU on Labour Cooperation.

The Ambassador expressed appreciation for the constructive cooperation extended by Romanian authorities in supporting Sri Lankan nationals living and working in Romania. The Director- General for Asia and the Pacific reaffirmed that foreign workers in Romania have access to established mechanisms for addressing concerns under national law.

Both parties agreed to maintain close engagement and continue working together to further deepen the partnership between Sri Lanka and Romania.
