Sri Lanka will host the 24th South Asia Teaching Session on international humanitarian law organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) with the support of the External Affairs Ministry from today to May 31.

Approximately 50 nominated individuals from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan will participate in the event. Participants range from government ministry officials, members of the Armed Forces, Police services, academics and civil society organisations.

Sri Lanka will be represented by 17 participants from the University of Colombo, the Justice Ministry, External Affairs Ministry, the Attorney General's Department, the Legal Draftsman's Department, Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and the Armed Forces.

Academics and experts in international humanitarian law will deliver lectures on topics such as the role of women in peace-building, the relationship between international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and provisions of international humanitarian law relating to missing persons.

"This unique event enables academics, public officials and members of the armed forces from the region and beyond who work in international humanitarian law or a related field to enhance their knowledge and share perspectives," said ICRC delegation in Sri Lanka head Cherine Pollini.
