President Mahinda Rajapaksa will hand over appointment letters to 5,000 nursing students at 10 a.m. today at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo, a Health Ministry spokesman said.
According to the spokesman, the ceremony will be held with the participation of Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena and many others.
Minister Sirisena instructed the immediate recruitment of 5,000 nurses to fill the existing vacancies and to strengthen the free health service.
"In 2010, a total of 3,366 and in 2012 a total of 2,23 nursing students were recruited for training respectively. The number of nursing students recruited for training in 2013 was 2,823 while another 2,535 nursing students were recruited for training this year (2014)," the spokesman said.
"In 2005 there were only 15,000 nurses in the service and now (in 2014) this number has been increased up to 30,547. There are 130 nurses for every 100,000 persons and this ratio will be increased to 160 for 100,000 by 2017. Rs. 200 million has already been allocated for the renovation of the 18 Nurses Training Schools in the country. The nurses will be given a local and foreign training, while selected nurses will be given specialized training," the spokesman added.
