China and Sri Lanka should join hands and open the "Silk Route" again, Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne said.
The Premier said so when Former Vice Premier of the Peoples Republic of China and Chairman of the Boao Forum, Cheng Piang called on him at the Prime Minister's office on November 21.
During the discussions Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne said the friendship and relations between China and Sri Lanka had a long history. In the past Chinese traders visited Sri Lanka along the Silk Route to engage in trade and commerce. There are 28 member countries in the Boao Forum and they are all South East Asian countries.
The Prime Minister recalled that he visited China with late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike and had the opportunity to meet late Chinese leader Mao Tse Tung. He said he was thankful for China for contributing towards Sri Lanka's development.
Cheng Piang who said that he observed the immense development strides made by Sri Lanka added that he would like to invite Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne to attend the next Boao Forum.
