The 77th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka was celebrated at the Representative Office of Sri Lanka in Ramallah under the patronage of Acting Representative of Sri Lanka to Ramallah, S. R. Mahinda Kumar on 04 February 2025. The event was held at the office premises with the participation of Sri Lankans in Palestine, representing Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and other communities.
The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by Acting Representative S. R. Mahinda Kumar, followed by the singing of the national anthem and the lighting of the oil lamp. A two-minute silence was observed in remembrance and honour of all patriots who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.
Following the religious observances, the Independence Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka were read out by the staff of the Post.
Addressing the gathering, the Acting Representative highlighted Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in all spheres including trade, tourism, investment and culture. He also expressed the friendly relations between the two countries and wishes for the continuation of the present ceasefire agreement.
The event also featured a presentation on the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, presenting the audience an overview of the government’s vision and mission for environmental restoration and social obligations.
The event concluded with a serving of traditional Sri Lankan refreshments.
