The National Language Training Centre has provided the knowledge of Sinhala writing and reading skills for Tamil civil servants and rehabilitated members of the LTTE in Northern and Eastern Provinces.
This Sinhala language training program is being conducted by the Rehabilitation Commissioner General's Office and National Language Training Centre.
In addition to the camps in Vavunia and Punthottam, language training has been provided to public servants in Mannar, Mullaitivu, Killinochchi and Jaffna.
The LTTE used to punish Tamil civilians who spoke even a single word in Sinhala, during the time of terrorism.
Therefore, the Government servants in Northern and Eastern provinces could not gain the knowledge of Sinhala language for last 30 years. The Government started providing the training on Sinhala language to them as soon as terrorism ended in 2009. As a result, the Government Officers have now gained a complete knowledge on Sinhala within such a short period. This program has also been introduced to the pre-schools in the areas. Accordingly, the pre-school children are taught Sinhala by their teachers.
Every Government servant in the North and the youth who will be recruited to jobs after being rehabilitated will also get this training on Sinhala language.
The program aims mutual understanding among Sinhala and Tamil people, living in the South and the North through peace, unity and reconciliation. (PRIU)
