The 62nd Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka was commemorated at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman with the participation of Sri Lankans and well wishers on 4th February, 2010.
Ceremony started with the hoisting of National Flag by the Ambassador Dr. A.W. Mohottala . Following the National Anthem and the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, two minutes silence was observed to remember the heroes who fought to gain independence to the country and those who lost their lives during the conflict.
The message of H.E. the President, Hon. Prime Minister and the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs were read at the ceremony and copies of the messages were made available to the participants.
Ambassador in his address mentioned that this is the first independence day we are celebrating after the liberation of the entire country from terrorist threat which lasted more than 3 decades.
He reiterated, the importance of working together as one nation "Sri Lankans" shedding all the differences for a new era of development and reconciliation.
Celebration continued in the evening at the Hotel Crowne Plaza with the participation of Jordan Government officials, Diplomatic and Business Communities and Sri Lankan diaspora in Jordan.
