Mrs. Chitranganee Wagiswara has been appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the President Maithripala Sirisena. She received her letter of appointment from President Sirisena today (19th January 2015) at the Presidential Secretariat. Thereafter, Mrs Wagiswara assumed duties at the Ministry Office at a simple ceremony.
Mrs Wagiswara is the senior-most officer serving in the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, having joined in 1981. She served as Third Secretary in Rome, Italy (1984– 1988), Ottawa, Canada (1991-1994) as First Secretary, and as the Deputy High Commissioner in London, United Kingdom (1996 – 1999).
In December 1999, she was appointed High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Singapore and served in that capacity until January 2003. In May 2005, she was appointed Ambassador to the Republic of France and Permanent Delegate to the UNESCO and completed her tour of duty in September 2008.
Mrs. Wagiswara was appointed to the post of High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Canada which she served from January 2010 to March 2014.
When on transfer to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in between her overseas assignments, Mrs. Wagiswara worked in the Administration & Publicity Division, South Asia & SAARC Division, West Division, Economic Affairs Division and Middle East & Africa Division in various capacities.
In April 2014 she was appointed Additional Secretary/Economic Affairs, East Asia and the Pacific at the Ministry of External Affairs in Sri Lanka.
Mrs. Wagiswara read for a degree in Bachelor of Commerce at the Sri Jayewardenepura University.
