Minister of Science, Technology and Research Susil Premajayantha met with Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Irina Bokova at the sidelines of the 39 session of the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris on 06 November 2017.
During the meeting, Minister Premajayantha informed the Director General about the significant steps that have been taken by the Government of Sri Lanka to improve and strengthen the science and technology sector of the country, including the decision to construct a state of the art Centre dedicated for science & innovation and reforming STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) education.
In response, Director General Bokova reaffirmed UNESCO's continued support to Sri Lanka in future. Further, she thanked Sri Lanka for the fruitful contributions that it has made to the role played by UNESCO for the common good of humanity.
In conclusion, Minister Premajayantha conveyed the appreciation of the Government of Sri Lanka for the excellent leadership given by Director General Bokova in spearheading the organization during the last eight years and wished her well in her future endeavours upon the completion of her term in the coming days.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to France & Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, B. K. Athauda, Director of the Ministry of Science, Technology & Research, Himali Athaudage and the Second Secretary of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris, Ruvini Munidasa were associated with the meeting.
The 39 session of the General Conference of UNESCO is taking place from 30 October to 14 November 2017 at its headquarters in Paris.
