Minister Jagath Balasuriya Commends UNESCO, Supports Palestine Entry

Minister of National Heritage, Dr. Jagath Balasuriya applauded the noble mandate of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) which aimed to build peace in minds and commended the manifold efforts being made by the organization to forge international intellectual moral solidarity through its various programmes in Education, Sciences, Culture and Communication.

Delivering the National Statement of Sri Lanka at the General Policy Debate of the 36 th session of the General Conference of UNESCO, Minister Balasuriya highlighted the progress made in Sri Lanka towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the consistent manner in which economic development was aiding progress in many sectors. He pointed out that the policy of quality education for all was moulding a generation which would make Sri Lanka a knowledge hub in Asia.

Making special mention of Palestine, the National Heritage Minister welcomed the bold step taken by the Executive Board to initiate the process of entry and noted need for the people of Palestine to benefit in the spheres of education, scientific advancement, cultural preservation and better communication through UNESCO.
