The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi organized a memorial service in honour of the late Mr. Sulaiman Jiffry Mohideen, the former Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United Arab Emirates, who passed away on 23 June 2018.
The memorial service was conducted with religious observances by religious dignitaries representing four major religions in Sri Lanka and with the participation of the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Northern Emirates. Buddhist religious observances were conducted by Ven. Kelaniye Ajitha Thero while Hindu, Islam and Christian religious observances were conducted by dignitaries from the respective religions, present at the event.
The memorial service was attended by about 200 members of the Sri Lankan community from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Northern Emirates, and community representatives who addressed the gathering recalled with appreciation the immense services rendered by the late Ambassador to the Sri Lankan community in the UAE during his tenure.
Addressing the gathering, Charge’ d’ Affaires a.i. of the Embassy Sisira Senevirathne noted with appreciation the late Ambassador’s remarkable service to the Mission and the Sri Lankan expatriate community during his tenure as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United Arab Emirates. The Consul General of Sri Lanka in Dubai Charitha Yattogoda also addressed the gathering and commended the late Ambassador for his service extended to the Mission and to the Sri Lankan community in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Northern Emirates.
The late Mr.Sulaiman Jiffry Mohideen was a lawyer by profession, and had held several official positions in various Government and Semi-Government institutions before being appointed as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United Arab Emirates in November 2015.
The Mission kept a Book of Condolences opened in honour of the late Ambassador at the Embassy. A number of diplomats representing Diplomatic Missions in Abu Dhabi, and members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community visited the Embassy to sign the Condolence Book.
