The Sri Lankan community in Canberra led by the Canberra Sri Lanka Muslim Association joined the High Commission staff in partaking of Ifthar on 2 June 2018.
Breaking of fast in the traditional manner was followed by a call to prayers, which was then observed by all members of the Muslim community who were present. Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Australia, Somasundaram Skandakumar in his welcome address said that the Holy Prophet Mohamed stressed the value of humility because it was only when one was humble could one be sensitive to the needs of others. The High Commissioner added that "the Prophet also reminded us that our actions are judged by our intentions", and concluded that it was most gratifying to welcome representation from all communities at such a unique event at the Mission.
Speaking on behalf of the Canberra Sri Lankan Muslim community Mr. AshroffFarook thanked the High Commissioner, his colleagues and staff most sincerely for the arrangements. He elaborated on the concept of fasting, which goes beyond restraining oneself from food and drink to love and compassion for our fellow beings.
Mr. Farook also thanked the members of other Sri Lankan ethnicities and religions for their presence to demonstrate their solidarity and brotherhood.
