High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Canberra, Yasoja Gunasekera met Senior Advisor to the Smart Energy Council, Scott Hamilton, and Senior Advisor of the Smart Energy Council, Richard Neumann, to discuss potential areas of collaboration in the renewable energy sector.
The Smart Energy Council is an independent body for the Australian smart energy industry, driven by a membership from across the smart energy industry. Key focus areas include solar power, wind energy, battery storage and bioenergy solutions. Members of the Council include Australian and international businesses. The Council has established joint venture partnerships, particularly with India, through which it undertakes projects and facilitates technology sharing. Rooftop solar was identified as a major area of engagement, supported by training programmes to build technical capacity. Balcony solar, a relatively new initiative in Australia, aimed at expanding access to solar energy in urban residential settings was also highlighted at the meeting.
High Commissioner Gunasekera noted that the Sri Lankan government has set a goal of achieving 70% renewable energy generation by 2030 and becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
The Smart Energy Council expressed interest in collaborating with Sri Lanka particularly in training, technology sharing and renewable energy development.
