High Commission of Sri Lanka in UK Commemorates 77th Anniversary of Independence

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom commemorated the 77th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence on 04 February 2025 at the High Commission premises.

The ceremony commenced with the singing of the National Anthem in Sinhala, followed by a two-minute silence in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Chief Sanga Nayake of Great Britain & Chief Incumbent of London Buddhist Vihara Most Ven Bogoda Seelawimala Thero, Reverend Sivananthasarma Sivaruban Kurukkal, Sheikh Thalha Siddiq of Sri Lanka Muslim Cultural Centre in Harrow, and Reverend Father Kamal Kumara of the Sri Lankan Catholic Chaplaincy conducted multi-faith religious observances invoking blessings for peace, unity, and prosperity of the country.

Following the religious observances, the Independence Day messages of the President, Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism were read out in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

The Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom addressed the gathering, highlighting the significance of Sri Lanka’s progressive development amidst numerous challenges since Independence. She also highlighted the longstanding relations between the UK and Sri Lanka and the government’s aim to strengthen this historic relationship.

The Acting High Commissioner shared the details of Clean Sri Lanka, the Government’s flagship project, and requested all gathered to support this new initiative. Acknowledging the significant contributions of the Sri Lankan diaspora, she urged them to stand united in assisting the new Government, in line with the Government’s endeavour to bring all communities together.

The event’s conclusion was marked by the playing of the National Anthem in Tamil.

The event was attended by faith leaders, representatives of the UK Government, representatives from the Sri Lankan community, and well-wishers.
