
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation hosted a cultural evening on 19 February 2026 to mark the 78th Independence Day of Sri Lanka. The event, held at the Embassy premises, brought together Russian government officials, diplomats, business leaders, academics, artists, and members of the Sri Lanka–Russia Business and Professional Association.
The evening commenced with a vibrant traditional welcome dance performed by Sri Lankan students, followed by the singing of the National Anthems of Sri Lanka and Russia. An auspicious oil lamp lighting ceremony was performed by distinguished guests, including Director of the Second Asia Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Ambassador Alexey Pavlovsky and two former Russian Ambassadors to Sri Lanka.
Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera delivered remarks on the significance of 78 years of independence and the strength of Sri Lanka–Russia relations. Ambassador Gunasekera thanked the Russian government and people for their assistance during the catastrophic natural disaster ‘Ditwa’, and acknowledged Russia’s support and mutual respect in international fora. Ambassador Pavlovsky conveyed warm congratulations from the Russian side and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
The program showcased Sri Lankan folk songs alongside renowned Russian pieces performed by Sri Lankan students, which drew special attention and were highly praised by attendees. A video highlighting Sri Lanka Tourism was screened, showcasing the island’s natural beauty and rich heritage. Daria Karacheva, and her family of professional artists, decorated the event with some of their paintings of Sri Lankan landscapes and everyday life painted during their stay on the island.
Guests were treated to an authentic Sri Lankan buffet with a lively Calypso session by Sri Lankan students, bringing the celebration to a joyous and memorable close.
Sri Lanka and Russia will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations in 2027 and the event also highlighted the need to celebrate this milestone to reflect the importance of the bilateral relations.
