Embassy of Sri Lanka in collaboration with Bahrain LMRA and IOM conducts awareness session on human trafficking and labour matters

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bahrain, in collaboration with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) of Bahrain and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted an awareness session on human trafficking and labour matters for the Sri Lankan community, on 22 November 2024 for the second consecutive time, as part of the annual community outreach programmes. The session brought together a broad cross-section of Sri Lankans including migrant workers, community representatives and stakeholders.

The awareness session was designed to enhance the community's understanding of human trafficking risks, labour rights, and the legal protections available in Bahrain. Participants received practical information on recognizing trafficking vulnerabilities, reporting concerns, and navigating local labour laws effectively.

Policy Officer from the Partnership and Outreach Directorate of LMRA, Zainab Akbar Hajeeh provided an overview of Bahrain’s proactive measures to combat human trafficking and extend support to migrant workers.

Labour Mobility Project Officer of IOM Nihal Akl delivered a comprehensive presentation on safe migration practices and global approaches to prevent exploitation. She also explained practical methods to identify and report cases of human trafficking.

While expressing gratitude to Chief Executive Officer of LMRA, Nibras Mohamed Ali Taleb, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Bahrain, H.M.G.R.R.K. Wijeratne Mendis thanked Policy Officer LMRA Zainab Akbar Hajeeh, and Labour Mobility Project Officer IOM, Nihal Akl for their collaboration, and emphasized the importance of community awareness in preventing exploitation and ensuring safety.  Moreover, she emphasized the commitment of the President and the government of Sri Lanka in engaging with the migrant workforce, and encouraged Sri Lankans in Bahrain to stay aware of their rights and seek help when necessary. LMRA and IOM officials received tokens of appreciation for their contributions.

Minister and Head of Chancery of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manama, Madhuka Silva and Head of the Employment and Welfare Section of the Embassy Swarna Rathnayake addressed labour and consular matters emphasizing Sri Lanka’s commitment to protecting its citizens and fostering collaboration with Bahraini authorities.

Participants engaged in interactive discussions, gaining valuable insights into recognizing vulnerabilities and accessing resources to address challenges. The session also highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Embassy, LMRA, and IOM to promote the well-being of the Sri Lankan community in Bahrain.

The Embassy reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Sri Lankan nationals abroad and expressed its continued commitment to working with Bahraini authorities and international organizations to achieve these goals.
