Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing celebrates the 77th Independence Day

 

The 77th Independence Day of Sri Lanka was celebrated at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing,  on  05 February 2025, with the participation of the members of the Sri Lankan community, officers of the Sri Lankan armed forces, students from Beijing and other provinces, Embassy officials and their families.

The Independence Day ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka by Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Beijing, Majintha Jayesinghe, followed by the singing of the national anthem. The traditional oil lamp was lit ensuing a moment of solemnity and a two-minute silence was observed to honour the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom, peace, and prosperity of the motherland.

Vice Chief Incumbent of Linguang Temple, the Most Venerable Zong Zhi Thero; Reverend Imam Ma Hi Jun and Reverend Imam Ma Jia of the Beijing Islamic Association; and Reverend Father Simon Zhujie of the Archdiocese of Beijing conducted the Buddhist, Islamic, and Christian religious observances respectively. Reverend Brahmani Kurukkal of the Sri Bhadrakali Hanuman Kovil invoked blessings while joining the ceremony virtually. All religious dignitaries bestowed blessings upon Sri Lanka and its people.

The national Independence Day messages of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath were read out in the Sinhala, Tamil and English languages during the celebrations.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe highlighted the significance of the 4th of February which marks Sri Lanka’s achievement of sovereign independence and stated that the joy and pride evoked by the historic event seventy-seven years ago inspires courage and confidence among Sri Lankans, strengthening their collective resolve to work towards the progress of the motherland.

The event concluded with the guests being served traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.
