Embassy of Sri Lanka commemorates 77th Independence Day in Poland

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Poland commemorated the 77th anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka at the Embassy premises with the participation of the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan community in Poland including their families. The official ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka, followed by the singing of the national anthem in official languages, observing of a two-minute silence for the war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation, multi-faith religious observances, delivering the Independence Day messages of the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka in tri-languages. The ceremony also included the lighting of the traditional oil lamp by dignitaries, including the Ambassador of Sri Lanka, Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka and the President of the Sri Lankan Community Association in Poland.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Poland, Priyangika Dharmasena conveyed the policy of the new government.  A presentation was screened to elaborate on the government’s efforts in implementing ethical governance, combating corruption, encouraging efficiency in the public service, reviewing the IMF agreement for the benefit of the people of Sri Lanka. Ambassador Dharmasena also emphasized the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme of the government, aiming for “A Thriving Nation and A Beautiful Life”, Moreover, the Ambassador urged the Sri Lankan community to support projects aimed at eradicating rural poverty, ensuring environmental cleanliness, and implementing a digital economy and good governance.

The Ambassador also referred to the activities carried out by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Warsaw in the recent past to enhance bilateral cooperation with Poland and accredited Bulgaria in diverse areas, including in economic and cultural spheres. In addition, two meetings were held during the event for promoting educational exchanges, enhancing tourism and potential linkages with expatriates to enhance business opportunities.

Ambassador Dharmasena also addressed several consular matters of interest of the Sri Lankan community and took the opportunity to advise the community to comply with regulations of Poland when seeking employment in the country, to avoid hardships and varied complications.

At the official ceremony, the gathering was entertained with patriotic songs sung by the Sri Lankan community and gifts were presented to the attendees. The close of the ceremony was marked with an authentic Sri Lankan luncheon arranged by the Embassy.
