The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka organized an alms giving (Dhana) on 14 May 2023 at the Embassy premises.
The Dhana was held in memory of the late Lakshman Kadirgamar, former Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka. Late Minister Kadirgamar brought a proposal to the United Nations General Assembly to give international recognition for the day of Vesak. Consequently, Vesak was declared a Day of Observance by the General Assembly Resolution in 1999.
The ceremony was attended by 40 Buddhist monks from Sri Lanka, Austria, Malaysia, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Norway, Sweden and Italy who were in Vienna for the inaugural assembly of Sri Lankan Bhikkhu Association in Europe.
Maha Sanga conducted religious observances and invoked blessings on war heroes and the people of Sri Lanka.
The Diplomatic Corps, delegates of Austrian Buddhist Union and dignitaries attended the event.
