There were also attempts to disrupt and sabotage the programme by infiltrating their supporters to the event, but the programme went on successfully as planned. Prior to the event there were repeated announcements on a Tamil radio channel requesting the People to join a demonstration against the government of Sri Lanka ,which was staged outside the premises with around 100 people.
The Minister of National Languages and Social Integration of Sri Lanka, Vasudeva Nanayakkara was the Chief Guest at this year’s celebration. Religious dignitaries of the Buddhist, Hindu, Islam and Christian clergy graced the occasion and over 400 Sri Lankans participated in this function.

He underlined the importance of learning each other’s language and the role of his Ministry in implementing the National Language Policy with a view to bringing reconciliation and one Sri Lankan identity.
