The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Karachi celebrated the 66th Independence Day Anniversary on 4th February 2014 in the Consulate General premises, amidst a large gathering of Sri Lankans living in Karachi including Sri Lankan Armed Forces who are being trained in Karachi, Pakistan.
The National flag of Sri Lanka was hoisted by H. M. B. Herath, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Karachi. This was followed by singing of the national anthem, lighting of the traditional oil lamp and reading the message of His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, the President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka which was read in Sinhala, Tamil and English. Two minutes of silence was also observed in honor of those who have sacrificed their lives for the unity of Sri Lanka. Buddhist, Hindu, Islam and Christian religious dignitaries performed religious observances and blessed the Nation.
The Consul General H. M. B. Herath in his speech highlighted that the relations between Pakistan and Sri Lanka are solid and long standing. Further he stated that with the end of the prolong terrorism the country is now entering into a new era under the vibrant leadership of His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, the President of Sri Lanka.
A reception was also hosted with Sri Lankan traditional food for the gathering.
