
The Consul General of Sri Lanka Pradeepa Saram called on the Speaker of the Assembly of Victoria State, Maree Edwards MP on Tuesday 27 May 2025 at the Parliament Building of Victoria in Australia. During the discussion, views on strengthening and expanding relations including between the Legislatures of Victoria and Sri Lanka were discussed. Among the initiatives measured are the exchange of formal delegations and intensification of interactions between Victoria – Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Groups. The Speaker was accompanied by the Advisor to the Speaker Tom Bennet.
Victoria Parliament has a history of parliamentary exchanges and cooperation with Sri Lanka Parliament. A delegation including the Members of Parliament for the State of Victoria, Lee Tarlamis OAM, Pauline Richards and Gary Mass, visited the Parliament of Sri Lanka in January 2024 and discussions were held on parliamentary proceedings and further increasing educational opportunities for Sri Lankan students in Australia.
Both the Victorian Parliament and the Sri Lankan Parliament are members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and share some similarities in their structure and functions, reflecting a common parliamentary heritage rooted in the Westminster system.
