Diplomatic Briefing by the Sri Lanka Embassy in Brazil

The Sri Lanka Embassy in Brazil conducted a diplomatic briefing in the Embassy premises on 12th September 2013 to speak about the important developments that is being taking place in Sri Lanka after the dawn of peace. The briefing was attended by over 150 guests from the diplomatic and business communities as well as officers of the Foreign Service of Brazil. Sri Lanka Room at WHO Regional Office in New Delhi

The refurbished Sri Lanka Room at the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office in New Delhi was unveiled by the High Commissioner Prasad Kariyawasam, this month, in the presence of the WHO Regional Director Dr. Samlee Plianbangchang and Dr. Athula Kahandaliyange, Director General, Drug Technical Advisory Committee at the Regional Office and other distinguished guests. At the ceremony held for this purpose, High Commissioner Kariyawasam stated that the Sri Lanka Room is a symbol of cooperation and friendship between the WHO and Sri Lanka and its renovation is a token of appreciation of the assistance rendered by WHO for the development of Sri Lanka’s Health sector, including for promotion of Indigenous medicine.

Ambassador Aryasinha says High Commissioner Pillay has no mandate to set deadlines on Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva Ambassador Ravinatha Aryasinha told the UN Human Rights Council on Wednesday (25 September 2013) "Sri Lanka strongly repudiates the High Commissioner’s assertion that if certain concerns are not comprehensively addressed before March 2014, she believes the international community will have a duty to establish its own inquiry mechanisms". The Ambassador said High Commissioner Navanethem Pillay had "no mandate to make such a claim". He said having accomplished the task of bringing normalcy to the lives of the civilian population, GOSL has put in place "multiple mechanisms" to address concerns relating to accountability.

Prof. G.L. Peiris holds discussions with Counterpart from Sudan

External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris met his Sudanese counterpart Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Kartion at the sidelines of the UNGA in New York on Tuesday 24th September. The two Ministers discussed ways and means of enhancing the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Prof. Peiris observed that Sri Lanka attaches great importance to expanding its relations in Africa, and towards that end has initiated the establishment of diplomatic relations with several African countries. In this context he stressed the importance of strengthening particularly the economic and trade relations and the exchange of expertise. Minister Peiris also offered assistance to Sudan in healthcare and education, which sectors are particularly strong in Sri Lanka. Appreciating the offer, the Sudanese Minister observed that they would welcome training in nursing and opportunities for Sudanese students to study in Sri Lanka. He added that Asian-African collaboration was important and should be nurtured in bilateral as well as the multilateral context.
