The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Federative Republic of Brazil, Sumith Dassanayake who is concurrently accredited as Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Argentine Republic presented his Letter of Credence to the President of the Argentine Republic Alberto Fernandez at the Palacio St. Martin Square (Presidential Palace) in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, 01 August 2023.
Ambassador Sumith Dassanayake conveyed greetings and best wishes of President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Government of Sri Lanka to President Alberto Fernandez which was warmly reciprocated.
Ambassador Sumith Dassanyake, during his meeting with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina Pablo Tettamanti held on 02 August 2023 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina discussed on the status of bilateral relations between the two countries and areas that could be further expanded to enhance relations.
Ambassador Sumith Dassanyake also giving reference to the recent resolutions on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, briefed the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs on the progress Sri Lanka has made on building reconciliation among the communities and the commitment of President Ranil Wickremesinghe to resolve the concerns of the minority communities. Articulating the position of Argentina, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs informed the Ambassador that Argentina is of the view that it is up to the Government of Sri Lanka to formulate an appropriate domestic mechanism for reconciliation in finding lasting solutions to Sri Lanka’s own issues.
The Ambassador also had meetings with the Senior Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina vis-à-vis Director of Asia and Oceania Division Eduardo Acevedo Diaz and Director of the Division of Economic Relations for Asia and Oceania Marcos Antonio Bednarski. During the discussions, Ambassador Dassanayake underlined the importance for entering into Agreements on Political Consultations and establishment of a Joint Commission on Economic Relations between the two countries as such mechanisms are not in place even though Sri Lanka established formal diplomatic relations with Argentina far back in 1962, for which the officials positively responded.
