On 20.06.2023, Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Jordan, Tajma Kurt met the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Jordan, J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara at the UN Migration Agency.
During the Meeting, both parties exchanged views on International Migration, its impact on socio-economic developments of the countries, migrant workers’ issues as well as international legal framework for the governance of migration.
The Ambassador explained the IOM about Mission activities in the fields of combating Human Smuggling and Trafficking and promoting safe labour migration. She further expressed Mission’s interest to participate in joint ventures to discuss issues of improving social status of migrant workers in Jordan.
The IOM briefed on the proposed project to guarantee basic rights of the undocumented children born in Jordan to the foreign domestic workers as they do not have access for free movement, education, health etc. The Ambassador very much encouraged the proposed initiatives on the undocumented children and confirmed the Mission’s contribution for its endeavors.
Ms. Alina Mihai, Emergency and Resilience Coordinator/ Head of Unit briefed about the IOM assistance during the COVID 19 pandemic including health access to the undocumented migrant workers in Jordan and existing and future programs to protect migrants’ rights.
