The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Berlin, the Honorary Consulate of Sri Lanka in Bavaria and Suvarivi Ayurveda Resort in Sri Lanka collaboratively organized a symposium to increase awareness about Sri Lanka’s diverse tourism attractions. The event was held at the Nürnberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 13 September 2024.
Nürnberg is the second largest city of the German State of Bavaria, one of the most economically important States in Germany, and a significant source of tourism for Sri Lanka. The Nürnberg Metropolitan Region is one of Europe’s leading locations for ICT, medical technology and automotive industry. With a population of 522,554 (approx.), Nürnberg has been an important German city since the 7th century.
Among the distinguished invitees at the event was Lord Mayor of Nürnberg Marcus König, who addressed the gathering. The audience of approximately 200 participants consisting of representatives from the business community in Nürnberg was warmly welcomed by Dr. Irene Riedel of Suvarivi Ayurveda Resort. Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Bavaria and former Parliamentary State Secretary Dagmar Wöhrl spoke about her long association with Sri Lanka. In her keynote address, Ambassador Muthukumarana outlined the island’s heritage, culture, natural beauty and investment potential in the tourism industry. She also invited the participants to visit Sri Lanka to enjoy its tourism attractions and the warm hospitality of its people.
The symposium sought to expand the growing awareness in Germany about Sri Lanka’s excellence in Ayurveda. Head of the Ayurveda Department at the Habichtswald Clinic in Kassel Dr.Med. Ananda Samir Chopra made a presentation on the practice and relevance of the ancient healing system of Ayurveda in the modern world. Sri Lanka’s unique attractions as a destination for ‘Panchakarma’, the Ayurvedic rejuvenation therapy were described by the Managing Director of Fit Reisen, pioneers of wellness tourism, Claudia Wagner. Sarina Haniffa from Amano Jewels, a Jewelry company based in Nuremberg, shared insights on the therapeutic and healing properties of a diverse range of gem and semi-precious stones found in Sri Lanka, especially the globally popular sapphires. The event concluded with a networking event and serving of Sri Lankan delicacies.
