Sri Lanka Food Festival 2026, ‘Symphony of Spices’, concludes Successfully in Wellington, New Zealand

The Sri Lanka Food Festival 2026, “Symphony of Spices”, was successfully concluded on 25 April, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience the vibrant and diverse flavours of Sri Lanka in the heart of Wellington.

The festival was officially launched with a vibrant opening ceremony held on Thursday, 16 April 2026, at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor.

Organised by the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Wellington in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau and Dilmah Tea, the festival celebrated the island nation’s rich culinary heritage and cultural traditions.

The opening ceremony was graced by former Governor-General of New Zealand, Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, who attended as Guest of Honour. He was joined by Steve Martin, Area General Manager of Grand Chancellor Hotels – New Zealand, as well as senior government officials and key representatives from New Zealand’s travel, tourism, and media sectors.

At the heart of the festival was an exceptional buffet dining experience showcasing authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. The menu was carefully curated by renowned Sri Lankan chef Ruwan Surendra, working alongside the executive chefs of the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor. Guests were treated to an extensive selection of traditional dishes, highlighting the bold, aromatic flavours that define Sri Lankan cooking.

The festival was further enriched by colourful cultural performances from the Sri Lanka Dance Academy in Wellington, adding a lively artistic dimension to the culinary showcase. Throughout the festival period, the event received an enthusiastic response, with attendees expressing strong appreciation for both the food and the overall experience.

In his keynote address at the opening, Sir Anand Satyanand highlighted the growing recognition of Sri Lankan culture in New Zealand and underscored the enduring ties between the two nations.

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, Prasanna Gamage, also addressed the gathering, emphasising the importance of such initiatives in promoting Sri Lanka’s tourism, culture, and hospitality while strengthening bilateral relations.

Steve Martin also addressed the ceremony, sharing personal reflections on his family’s connection with Sri Lanka, its cuisine, culture, and people, which were warmly received by the audience.

Adding an interactive element to the festival, Sales Representative of Dilmah Tea, Senuka Sudusinghe, introduced guests to unique pairings of Ceylon tea and cheese, demonstrated aspects of Ceylon cinnamon processing, and provided insights into Dilmah’s role in the hospitality sector.

The Sri Lanka Food Festival 2026 stands as a testament to the growing cultural exchange between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
